Exercising with High Blood Pressure - Yes or No?

Are you wondering if you should exercise with high blood pressure? The answer is yes! Exercising with high blood pressure promotes heart health. Exercising routinely allows our body to regulate and lower our blood pressure over time by keeping our blood vessels and arteries in shape. Exercising also helps improve our mental health, aids in weight loss, and helps reduce stress. Being physically active is important because you reduce your risk for developing certain health conditions.

According to the American Heart Association adults should exercise,

  • “150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or

  • 75 minutes per week of vigorous aerobic activity or

  • a combination of both, preferably spread throughout the week.”

If you aren’t currently active we recommend building up slowly as you go!  Gradually increase the challenge level of activity and/or the quantity over time. Stay committed and you will see the results and feel good about yourself!

Now that summer is in full swing check out some fun ways to stay active with the season!

  • Swimming

  • Walking, jogging, or running

  • Bicycling

  • Jumping rope

  • Tennis, golf, pickle ball, basketball, baseball, etc.

Remember that whatever activity you choose, stay well hydrated, wear sunscreen if outdoors, and rest as needed.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Before participating in physical activity please consult with your primary care physician
